Note the difference

Solar heating produces hot water for the faucet and radiators—not electricity (that's what solar panels do).

Free energy for your hot water and your home

A solar heating system consists of solar collectors on the roof and a hot-water tank (or storage tank) indoors. The solar collectors capture the sun’s rays and heat a freeze-proof fluid, which is pumped down to the tank and heats your domestic hot water.

During the sunny months (spring and summer), the system can provide all the hot water you need for your household. This means that your primary heating system—such as your furnace or heat pump—can be turned off completely during the summer months, which significantly extends its service life.

Solar Heating for Domestic Hot Water (The Standard Solution)

This system is designed to meet a family's hot water needs for faucets and showers.

Setup: Typically 1–2 solar collectors on the roof and a 200–300-liter hot-water tank.

Best for: Standard single-family homes looking for a simple way to save on heating bills.

Combined System (Domestic Hot Water + Space Heating)

A larger system that, in addition to providing hot water, also helps heat the house's radiators or underfloor heating during the transitional seasons (spring and fall).

System Configuration: Several solar collectors (typically 3–5) connected to a large storage tank.

Best suited for: Homes with radiant floor heating or high heating demands, as well as in combination with a wood pellet stove or wood-burning stove.

Make Your Current Heating System More Efficient

Solar heating rarely works on its own during the winter in Denmark, but it is one of the best supplemental heat sources on the market. At Nørhalne VVS, we have extensive experience integrating solar heating with existing systems:

Saves you from having to heat the water in the summer just to get hot water.

It takes some of the load off the heat pump during the summer months and further reduces your electricity usage.

Reduces your consumption of purchased heat throughout the sunny part of the year.

Service Inspection

Although a solar heating system runs on its own most of the time, it needs to be inspected every few years.

Our solar heating service inspection includes:
  • Testing and measuring frost protection and pH levels.
  • Check the pressure and top off the fluid as needed.
  • Inspection of the expansion tank, pumps, and control system.
  • Inspection of solar collectors and pipe insulation.

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions About Solar Heating

Solar heating produces hot water via solar collectors for domestic use and space heating. Solar cells produce electricity via photovoltaic panels. If your primary goal is to have cheaper hot water, solar heating is a very straightforward and efficient solution.

In the winter, there are few hours of sunlight, and the sun is low in the sky. The system still produces a small amount of heat on clear winter days, but it is during the months from April through October that the system supplies the majority of its energy.

Solar panels work best on roofs with a pitch of between 30° and 45° facing south, southeast, or southwest. However, we can also install solar panels on flat roofs using special mounting brackets.
